The grain of hard maple (Acer saccharum) is fine and even textured. Growth rings are narrow and faintly contrasted. Color variations range from beige to almost white in the sapwood to full-bodied brown, making hard maple the lightest-toned hardwood species. The wood changes color moderately over time, becoming gold tinged. This wood has a hardness rating of 1 450 in the Janka test.

CLASSIC - The contrasting appearance of this grade is the result of a mixture of all the natural shades of the species dominated by full-bodied tones. Moderate to pronounced variations among boards.
